'Porn king' faces drugs, weapons charges
Jan De Smet previously arrested on more than 25 charges and acquitted on all counts
Australia- BRISBANE'S self-proclaimed "porn king" was yesterday refused bail when he fronted court charged with supplying and possessing a range of illicit drugs and carrying weapons including a loaded semi-automatic pistol on Tuesday night.

Lawyers for Jan De Smet, 42, told the Brisbane Magistrate's Court their client was repeatedly targeted by police - having been previously arrested on more than 25 charges and acquitted on all counts. De Smet a sex shop owner who operates businesses in Brisbane, Logan and northern New South Wales, was arrested and charged with 13 offences after police stopped him and searched his car on Tuesday night.

He was not required to enter a plea to five counts of possessing and one of supplying a dangerous drug, three of carrying a firearm or weapon and one each of possessing a pipe and utensils used in connection with drugs and possession of money suspected of being proceeds of a crime. Lawyer Stuart Bale, for De Smet, said his client was a successful businessman who employed 22 staff at his various businesses. Mr Bale said that at the time of his client's arrest he was carrying cash that was takings from one of his businesses.

He said the pipes allegedly used in connection with drugs were property he legally stocked and sold out of his business premises. Police opposed a bail application made by De Smet on the grounds he was on bail for other weapons offences at the time of his arrest and that the charges he was facing were very serious. The court was told police would allege De Smet was arrested while conducting an illegal drug business.

Mr Bale said his client had been constantly targeted by police and was yet to be convicted of any charge. "It makes one wonder if there is some excess attention being put on Mr De Smet," he said. Magistrate John Smith declined De Smet bail, saying he was already on bail for alleged weapons offences at the time of Tuesday's alleged crimes.

De Smet was remanded in custody for mention of his charges on January 9.
